Bird of the Year 2026

We are backing the bittern

Whangamarino Wetland is one of the core sites for the endangered Australasian bittern — matuku-hūrepo — and home to the largest bittern population in Aotearoa. That is why WWWR is voting for it in Bird of the Year 2026. As our team puts it, this is TK’s bird — a taonga worth raising our voices for.

How to vote

  1. Visit the Bird of the Year voting page at birdoftheyear.org.nz
  2. Choose Matuku-hūrepo | Australasian bittern
  3. Complete your vote
  4. Tell your friends and family — shy birds need a little help being heard

Shared by Piako Waihou Catchment Trust. Thanks to The Forest Bridge Trust, Love Bittern, Matuku Link, Vote for Matuku, and everyone else backing the bittern.
